NAGASAKI--Mayor Iccho Itoh, a high-profile promoter of world peace, died early Wednesday after being shot in the back by a gangster harboring a grudge against the city, police said.
The 61-year-old mayor was pronounced dead at 2:28 a.m. at the Nagasaki University Hospital from massive blood loss due to two bullets that had ruptured his heart, hospital officials said.
Tetsuya Shiroo, 59, a senior member of a yakuza organization affiliated with the Yamaguchi-gumi, the nation's largest crime syndicate, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder immediately after the shooting Tuesday night. Police are now investigating the case as a murder.
Although Shiroo ranked high in the hierarchy of his crime group, police said they believe the attack was carried out on a personal level and was not backed by any yakuza organization, police said.
Nagasaki prefectural police searched five locations, including Shiroo's home and his office, early Wednesday morning.
Itoh, who was running for his fourth term in Sunday's mayoral election, was shot twice from behind at close range around 7:50 p.m. Tuesday in front of his campaign office near JR Nagasaki Station.
According to hospital officials, the bullets entered his body from the right side of the backbone, ripped through his heart and were stopped at the chest bones.
Itoh was already in a state of cardio-respiratory arrest when he was taken to the hospital after 8 p.m.
"He was likely shot from point-blank range," said Kiyoyuki Eishi, a cardiovascular surgery professor at the hospital who was in charge of the operation.
"It was difficult to confirm the damaged sections and to stop the bleeding," he said.
Police quoted Shiroo, who has admitted he intended to kill Itoh, as saying, "I thought I would kill myself after shooting the mayor."

My favorite singer-Jay Chou
My favorite singer is Jay. I loves him so much. He is not only a good singer but also a good composer and a mv director.
His mom is a music teacher.He learned to play piano since he was 3. His mother gave him a very hard time on practicing. When other childrens were playing outside, he had to stay at home and practiced piano. He though he is the poorest children in the world, but when he grew up, he was thankful for his mom.
Jay is really a famous star now, but 6 years ago, he just nothing in his job. Ater his hard work, he finally became a super star. I started to crazy about him since five years ago. When I first time hear his song, I became his big fan! :)
Jay was even once on the cover of the Times magizine!!!!! He and A-mei are the only ones that were once on the cover of it. Jay was even once on the Japan NHK program,"Pop Jam", the hottest program in Japan. Many singer in this program only sing Janpanese or English, but Jay is the first one who sings Chinese!
Jay is really a daughterly preson. He wrote many songs to his family. He wrote a song foe his mother and his grandma.(外婆, 聽媽媽的話....) He also wrote some songs to assault or make a dig at the dog packs.(四面楚歌,紅模仿) I think he is a colllllllllllll person!!!!!!!!!!!
Jay not only did a good job in music, but also did a good job in movie! He started to contact movie two years ago.His maiden work in movie is a movie about himself.(尋找周杰倫) But Jay just appear for 5 minutes. His second movie is about race car.(頭文字D) It's really a great and exciting movie. I watch this movie for 4 time but never getboresome! His lastest movie will produce on 12/20th. (滿城盡帶黃金甲)Y' all surely go to see the movie!!!!!!!!! He is preparing his new movie.(籃球) The movie will produce in 2007. I really expect it!
Many people say that they think Jay's music is always the same and he sings very unclearly, but everytime I listen to his music, his song touch me.I can listen to his albom for 2 month everyday.
